Glenn Close, 75, explains how women are "so brainwashed" about ageing

Glenn Close doesn’t feel like she’s in her seventies. In her mind, she’s still 25—which is why it can sometimes be difficult to embrace the ageing process. What makes it even harder, though, is society’s unrealistic beauty standards, she recently told Glamour.

As you’ve probably noticed, multi-step anti-ageing skincare routines, procedures, fillers, and the like are pervasively becoming the norm in fear of ageing naturally—a phenomenon Close frankly compares to being brainwashed.

"We are so brainwashed about skin. Certainly about women’s skin," she declared. "The texture of your skin, and the warm, the hard, smooth bodies against the ones that are fighting to get a waist again."

Although it’s not always easy, instead of scrutinising her skin, the Fatal Attraction star tries to find the beauty in it. "I look at my arm in the morning at a certain light and I go, 'Ah! Are you kidding me? Whose arm is this? Are you kidding?' And it’s like, Okay, I see; it’s happening," she told Glamour. “So I’m trying to come to the point that I just embrace my—what’s the word they use for it? Crepey skin? Is there a beauty in it? I try to think that maybe it looks like the sand after the tide has gone out."

Still, to Close, her appearance is not what defines her. "I’ve always felt that my body is not really who I am. We have this house, if you will, that we look out of during our whole life, and it’s not who you are," she explained. What matters, she said, is what’s inside. "It’s actually fascinating to me, because as our house ages, we should get more and more interesting and interested," she added. "And yet you have this facade that people see."

At 75, Close’s life is more interesting and accomplished than ever. In fact, after a decade-long hiatus, she just made a return to TV in the Apple+ thriller Tehran. It’s her first foreign language series, to boot—she learned Farsi for the role. "I studied for about two months," she revealed. '"I had three lessons a day. I said to everyone, ‘I want to speak Farsi that will surprise Farsi speakers’. And so we worked really hard."

No matter the state of her 'house', Close is proudly continuing to harness the power within it. No serums, creams, or tinctures needed.
