Update 24/6/21: Jennifer Aniston discusses 'buddy' Brad Pitt

With nostalgia for celebrity couples at fever pitch - thanks to Bennifer 2.0 aka Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck seemingly rekindling their relationship - Jennifer Aniston has once again been asked what the current state of her relationship with ex-husband Brad Pitt is.

Interest in the couple, who separated in 2005 after five years of marriage, peaked over the last 18 months when they had their first public reunion in years at the SAG awards, reunited again on screen in a virtual read-along of Fast Times At Ridgemont High, and Aniston praised Pitt when discussing Friends cameos for the long-awaited cast reunion. The former couple's mutual friend Melissa Etheridge also weighed in last year (which you can read more about below) suggesting Aniston and Pitt will 'always be friends'.

Now, speaking to Sirius XM's Howard Stern on June 23, Aniston - who was joined by her Friends co-stars Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow - was asked by Stern if it was 'awkward' collaborating with her ex on the read-through.

'No! It was absolutely fun,' Aniston clarified. 'Brad and I are buddies, we're friends and we speak, there's no oddness at all except for everyone who probably watched it and wanted there to be or assumed there to be.'

While it's somewhat bizarre to think that things have actually happened this year, they have. And, one of the biggest pop culture moments was when former golden couple of the noughties - Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt - reunited at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards.

The couple were photographed congratulating one another after both winning awards that night, Aniston for The Morning Show and Pitt for Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood. They hugged backstage, smiled and grabbed each other's hands in a picture that swiftly went viral.

Despite how circumstances have changed since the February awards, it seems people are as curious as ever for an update on Aniston and Pitt's relationship - proven to be the case during a special lockdown episode of Watch What Happens Live earlier this week.

Singer Melissa Etheridge - a close friend of both Pitt and Aniston and who performed at their wedding in 2000 - was asked about the 'hysteria' surrounding the couple's SAG reunion during a game of 'Iso-lay it on us' while appearing on the show from home.

'I was hoping I could do your show without mentioning her whose name will not be mentioned,' Etheridge joked. 'But you know what, I loved Brad and Jen together, they were beautiful and I believe they will always remain friends because they're two very special people who can get through anything.

'I hope that their friendship lasts... those were the glory days like you were saying, I remember those days so...'

Pitt and Aniston were one of the 'it' couples in the late nineties and early noughties at the peak of their fame and careers too, as Aniston was best known as Rachel Green in Friends and Pitt had lead roles in the Oceans' trilogy, Fight Club and Troy.

They announced their divorce after five years of marriage in 2005. Pitt then dated his Mr and Mrs Smith co-star Angelina Jolie, with this relationship and his recent split turning into an even bigger media circus with 'Team Jolie' and 'Team Aniston' t-shirts even being sold at the time.

Pitt and Jolie ended their two year marriage and 11 year relationship in 2016, they share six children together.
