Katherine Heigl opens up about decision to adopt her daughters
Katherine Heigl has opened up about her decision to adopt her daughters.
Heigl and husband Josh Kelly married in December 2007 and two years later adopted Naleigh, now 14, from South Korea. In 2012, they adopted daughter Adalaide, now 10. The couple welcomed a son, Joshua, in 2017.
Speaking to Red magazine, Heigl said she told her husband early on in their relationship that she wanted to adopt, having grown up with older sister Meg who was adopted from South Korea.
"About six months after meeting my now-husband I was, like, 'I'd better get a few things straight now, marriage and having a family are both really important to me. Starting a family with adoption is also really important to me'," Heigl said (via People).
"'If those things don't speak to you, we should part ways.' Luckily, he was, like, 'I'm down with that!'"
Heigl, who currently stars in Netflix's Firefly Lane, went on to say that adoption "has always been a part of my life".
"I was born into it. I wanted my family to look like the one I came from," she added.
In November, Heigl discussed how difficult it was balancing becoming a mother with her demanding shooting schedule for Grey's Anatomy.
In an appearance on The View, Heigl said: "I never saw that baby. I was at work with three triplets who were playing my goddaughter, and I spent more time with them than I did with my new daughter and she bonded with my husband.
"So, I was always afraid that I had missed that opportunity to really bond with her and that she didn’t love me."
Grey's Anatomy and Station 19 air on Thursdays on ABC in the US. Both shows stream on Disney+ in the UK.
