We all know and love Danny Devito's 1996 masterpiece, Matilda. You can probably recite the lines on demand (and you very much should), you may even have been lucky enough to see Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly's hugely successful Matilda the Musical on the West End. So, imagine just how happy you'd be if the iconic story was making its way onto Netflix and into our living rooms? Well, have we got happy news for you.

In 2020 Netflix confirmed it was working with Sony on a movie adaptation of the West End musical, which is based on Roald Dahl's famous children's book from 1988, and now it's been revealed Bond star Lashana Lynch and Emma Thompson are both set to be starring. We cannot wait.

Here's everything we know about Netflix's musical Matilda remake.

Who's been cast in Netflix's Matilda remake?

The main characters have now been confirmed, and it's an impressive line-up. On January 14th, Netflix announced Oscar winner Dame Emma Thompson would be taking on the role of Miss Trunchbull.

According to multiple reports, including one from Deadline in early 2020, Ralph Fiennes was originally set to play the mean headmistress, but producers eventually settled on Dame Emma.

The other exciting news is that No Time To Die star Lashana Lynch will play teacher Miss Honey. As for Matilda herself, she'll be played by relative newcomer, Dublin-based 11-year-old Alisha Weir.

Elsewhere in this stunning cast we have the ever-brilliant Stephen Graham as Mr Wormwood, alongside National Treasure's Andrea Riseborough as Mrs Wormwood. This truly might be the perfect cast?

Do we have a trailer for Matilda?

Ohhhh yes we do, and obviously, since the trailer landed in mid-June people have gone just slightly wild over it. I mean, how good does this look?

When can we expect Matilda to be released?

The big news is that we don't have long to wait for this. Netflix's Matilda is due to land on 2 December 2022. Okay, fine so we have a bit of time to wait, but it's this year at least!
