Line of Duty spoilers follow.

Kelly MacDonald, who plays DCI Joanne Davidson in Line of Duty, has revealed whether she would return to the BBC drama series.

The series 6 finale revealed that Davidson had gone into witness protection and was living under a new identity in a remote rural location, with a new partner and pet dog for company.

Asked whether she'd reprise her role for a potential season 7, MacDonald told Radio Times she doesn't expect her character to come back – any time soon at least.

"I don't think my character will be back. I suppose it's a possibility at some point," she explained.

MacDonald went on to explain the pressures of filming during the COVID-19 pandemic, adding: "I have to say that Line of Duty for me was a very odd experience because of COVID.

"It was strange days and it feels there's life before COVID and life after, and Line of Duty was right at that point for me."

Macdonald's Operation Mincemeat co-star Penelope Wilton recalled Macdonald learning lines for a "difficult" Line of Duty script while they were working on the movie together.

Elsewhere in the interview, Macdonald shared the moment she was cast as Jean Leslie in the new World War II movie alongside Colin Firth.

"I'm friends with [Firth] and we had been for lunch and he was telling me – because I know John Madden as well, the director, through Colin just over the years – and he said, 'Oh, John's making this film and I think we're going to do it.'

"And he told me the story. And I was saying, 'It’s just fascinating', and, 'You have to definitely do it'."

Macdonald went on to reveal how a few weeks later she got a call asking her to join the project and was "thrilled" to take the part.

Line of Duty series 1-6 are available on BBC iPlayer, and DVD and Blu-ray boxsets are also available to buy now.
