Line of Duty's Martin Compston almost didn't audition for the role of Steve
Line of Duty's Martin Compston has revealed he almost didn't bother auditioning for the hit BBC show.
It might be hard to imagine the crime drama without the beloved AC-12 trio, played by Adrian Dunbar, Vicky McClure and Martin Compston.
However, it turns out that was almost the case.
Line of Duty star Craig Parkinson revealed in an Instagram post this week that Compston "needed a nudge" to audition for the crime drama after he was invited by show bosses.
"For a man of great taste, he needed a nudge. I told him he had to meet on this as I'd just read the greatest first two episodes of a new series I had ever read," Parkinson wrote.
He continued: "Myself and Martin had our auditions within minutes of each other and met prior to run our lines with each other. It was the very next day I received a call saying that the role of Steve was being offered to another actor. I asked who it was. They told me, 'Martin Compston'.
"I was in the bath at the time, I remember that. I also remember that I was genuinely made up for my mate. They then asked how I felt about playing a role called Mathew 'dot' Cotton. Little did I know."
Parkinson went on to say that Line of Duty changed the lives of the whole cast and thanked all the viewers who stuck around after season one until the end.
"At the start, we were a word of mouth hit. After that? Well..." he added.
Line of Duty became a huge hit for the BBC. However, as of yet, there has been no official confirmation that another series is in the works.
That doesn't mean it won't happen though, with Dunbar recently hinting that something could be in the pipeline as early as next year.
Line of Duty series 1-6 are all available on BBC iPlayer, and DVD and Blu-ray boxsets are also available to buy now.
