BBC reveals 'Line of Duty' season 6 will have extra episode

Line of Duty's upcoming sixth series will have an extra episode, it has been revealed.

Since the second season, all instalments of the police procedural drama have had six episodes but it's now been confirmed its sixth run will have seven.

The news was confirmed by the BBC via Detective Sergeant Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) himself in a teaser clip also featuring Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar).

In the video posted to Twitter, Steve said: “Regardless of the personnel involved, Vella’s still the highest-profile inquiry engaging this force.”

Ted replied: “I’m gonna need a hell of a lot more before I can authorise a formal inquiry.”

"But, sir," Steve continues before Ted silences him in classic Hastings style: “Houl yer whisht! I need more.”

Steve's Voiceover then teases: “How about an extra episode, gaffer?”

The caption on the clip read: "Listen up, fellas. When the gaffer asks for more, you better deliver.

"#LineOfDuty returns for Series 6 with an extra episode (7 instead of 6). Coming soon to @BBCOne and @BBCiPlayer."

Steve and Ted will be returning alongside Vicky McClure's Detective Inspector Kate Fleming while Kelly Macdonald joins the cast as the show's guest series lead.

She's playing Detective Chief Inspector Joanne Davidson, who has been described as "the senior investigating officer on an unsolved murder case whose unconventional conduct attracts the attention of AC-12". But specifics of the plot are being kept under wraps.

Filming on the programme was disrupted due to the coronavirus pandemic, with filming resuming in August after being disrupted in March.
