How locals on Vancouver Island are helping to protect Meghan and Harry's privacy
Since Meghan and Harry announced that they're moving across the pond to live part-time in Canada, it has been rumoured that they'll be settling in a house on Vancouver Island, off Canada's Pacific coast - which is where they spent part of their six-week extended Christmas break.
With rumours of the house's exact location circling, Vancouver Island locals have been protecting the famous couple from reporters trying to reach their new home.
Water taxi driver, Miles Arsenault, who has been named "a local legend" on Twitter, revealed that he declined a request from a Japanese television company to drive them to the island to visit Meghan and Harry's property.
"It's invasion of privacy," he told reporters from As It Happens, a Canadian radio show. Miles continued, saying that while the TV company didn't specifically mention Harry and Meghan, he knew that their visit seemed suspect.
"I didn't know at that time that it was Meghan and Harry's private residence," said Miles. "But I asked them if this was involving them and they admitted that it was."
"At that point, I said, 'You're going to have to hire yourself another water taxi company.'"
Miles added that the trip, which would have earned him $300 "wasn't going to make or break the bank," but that he put Meghan and Harry's privacy first and sympathised with them, saying, "I don't want peeping Toms. If I'm sitting out on my deck, I don't want it in my life."
The water taxi driver, who used to be a photographer, revealed, "I know what it is to get the shot — the money shot. Reporters, photographers, videographers — they need to make a living. But they're not going to make it on my boat." Meanwhile, he admitted that the reporters Meghan and Harry may face in Vancouver Island were considerably fewer than those in the UK.
However, while Miles is refusing to take people to Meghan and Harry's home, he revealed that other water taxi drivers aren't doing the same, and have agreed to drive people to the island. Still, Miles believes that most of the Vancouver Island community are excited to welcome Meghan and Harry, and that they "wish them nothing but the best."
Let's hope that the rest of Meghan and Harry's new neighbours will be just as respectful.
