Lucy Boyton's festive beauty has a modern gothic twist
Lucy Boynton made a convincing case for modern gothic make-up at the Los Angeles premiere of The Pale Blue Eye this week.
Celebrity make-up artist Jo Baker showcased her darker spin on classic festive beauty via Instagram, sharing a behind-the-scenes snippet of Boynton's lip application alongside a track of Tchaikovsky's Sugar Plum Fairy. With a dialled-back base and softly feathered brow, the striking look revolved around the actress' stark chocolate cherry lip and complementing mulberry mascara. Baker coined the look "modern gothy vibes".
Soft-goth make-up has been trending this month thanks to the success of Netflix hit Wednesday, with fans eager to adopt similar looks to those worn by stars Jenna Ortega, Catherine Zeta Jones and Gwendoline Christie – all of which revolve around a strong lip. Helpfully, the show's make-up artist has been sharing all the cosmetics she used on set.
Baker also revealed the products used to construct Boynton's delicate look. The lipstick of the hour? Chanel's luxurious Rouge Allure L'Extrait. The artist is yet to confirm the exact hue used, though our research suggests the rich plum brown can be credited as shade 878. Alongside the high-intensity lip colour, we also spied a Duo Lumière Multi-Use Illuminating Eye Gloss, Éclat Lunaire Illuminating Face Powder and the cheek enlivening N°1 De Chanel Lip And Cheek Balm, all Chanel.
As Baker eloquently states in her caption, "'tis the season for all things that glisten, shimmer and sparkle".
Boynton's fresh copper locks, which appear fierier than their original strawberry blonde introduction at project's London premiere in November, were set in loose natural waves by hairstylist Jenny Cho; an effortless contrast to the actress' statement gothic make-up.
The ethereal Sugar Plum Fairy ensemble was completed with a vintage-inspired puffed-sleeve ball gown, also by Chanel.
The star isn't the first to opt out of a traditional letterbox red lipstick in the run up to Christmas. Fellow actresses Florence Pugh and Ellie Bamber also veered towards a deeper burgundy shade at their appearances at the Fashion Awards in London earlier this month.
