Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen: 'The Row reflects our discreet nature'

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen believe their fashion line The Row reflects their "discreet" nature.

The actresses-turned-designers revealed in a rare interview that maintaining a private life is important to both themselves and their business.

"We were raised to be discreet people," Mary-Kate told i-D magazine, when asked about The Row's modest style.

"I think that potentially that's just our aesthetic, our design preference," Ashley added. "But that doesn't mean that we don't also appreciate something truly ornate or maximal. Sometimes a collection even starts quite like that, and then gets pared down. It doesn't always start from that simplistic place."

Mary-Kate and Ashley are celebrating 15 years since The Row launched, and despite its success, the famous duo admits they were initially reluctant to publicise their association with the brand.

"We didn't want to be in front of it, we didn't necessarily even want to let people know it was us," Ashley said. "It was really about the product, to the point where we were like: Who could we get to front this so that we don't have to?

"I think, to this day, you'll see we really put the product first."

During the interview, Mary-Kate also revealed she and Ashley are "very much perfectionists" and are closely involved in every detail of their creations for The Row.

Mary-Kate and Ashley have made no secret of their desire to maintain a low profile since stepping away from acting roles. They even chose not to take part in the Netflix reboot of Full House, which propelled them to fame as child stars, in order to focus on their fashion business.
