A first look at the anticipated big-screen adaptation of the Matilda musical has been released, giving us a terrifying glimpse at Emma Thompson's Miss Trunchbull, among others.

Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical – coming to UK cinemas in December – stars newcomer Alisha Weir as the magical child prodigy, with Thompson playing the villainous headmistress and No Time to Die's Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey.

In the first trailer, we get a showcase of the epic musical numbers, as well as characters such as Honey, Mr and Mrs Wormwood (played by Line of Duty's Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough), and librarian Mrs Phelps (comedian Sindhu Vee).

"Matilda Wormwood. Criminals like you need a real lesson," the unrecognisable Thompson tells the youngster towards the end of the clip, before we get a preview of Trunchbull's infamous pigtail swinging in the playground.

The movie is also set to star now-former Strictly Come Dancing professional Aljaž Škorjanec, who is taking on an undisclosed role – fans were given a glimpse at him filming on set in a stylish car last year.

Fans in the UK will be able to catch Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical later this year in cinemas, while the rest of the world will be able to watch it on Netflix.

Matilda is based off Tim Minchin's acclaimed musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's book, and debuted in 2011 in the West End. The movie is being directed by Matthew Warchus and written by Dennis Kelly.

The story was famously adapted for the big screen in 1996, which starred Mara Wilson, Pam Ferris, Embeth Davidtz and Danny DeVito (who also directed).

Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical is set to hit UK cinemas on December 2, and will be released on Netflix in the US.
