The Menu on Disney+: What happened to Tyler?

Much to fans' delight, the comedy-thriller film The Menu recently made its streaming debut, dropping on Disney+ on January 3rd. But amongst the meme-able moments and classic black humour, plenty of viewers have all been asking the same burning question: what actually happened to Tyler?

For some context, the 2022 film follows a young couple Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Tyler, (Nicholas Hoult) who visit Hawthorn, an exclusive restaurant on a private island. Run by acclaimed head chef, Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes), the film takes a twisted turn as he plans to kill his diners, kitchen staff, and even himself, by adding lethal ingredients to the dishes.

Tyler - who is a self-proclaimed foodie has brought Margot along to the dinner, despite her not being on chef Slowik's carefully curated guest list. However, it turns out that Tyler knew of the deadly plans all along, which immediately sends red flags as to what kind of person he is.

But regardless of him knowing what was about to go down, Tyler didn't anticipate his own fate, which turned out very differently from what he expected...

So, what happened to him?

Slowik's plan for the mass killing was because he believed that all of the diners represented a deadly sin. Upon noticing Margot and realising she's not one of his selected diners, he believes that she's concealing her identity.

"I've served many Margot's, you're not a Margot," he says after she insists she's who she says she is.

Slowik assumes right, and it turns out she's a sex worker called Erin who Tyler asked as his date for the evening.

Slowik humiliates Tyler

Ralph Fiennes' character is already unenamoured with Tyler, as he watches him mansplain all of the courses to Margot, as well as take photos of the food, which is forbidden.

To humiliate him, he forces Tyler to show the rest of the guests how good of a chef he thinks he is, challenging him to prepare a course. What follows is a *major* food failure, with him cracking under the pressure and producing "Tyler's Bullshit" - described as "undercooked lamb, inedible shallot-leek butter sauce, utter lack of cohesion".

After Slowik spits it out, he blames Tyler for being the reason why "mystery has been drained from our art," before calling him closer.

As the rest of the guests look on, he then whispers something inaudible into Tyler's ear. Clearly shocked and broken, he faintly answers "yes, chef" and removes his chef whites.

Before heading to the back of the kitchen, he also removes his tie, which heads up - is a key element in his fate.

Margot finds Tyler

Slowik then reveals to Margot that she's "free too," and brings her on board as part of his team. He sends her to grab a barrel from the smokehouse, but on the way out, she notices Tyler's body hanging in the back.

Quite clearly dead, it seems that whatever Slowik whispered to him was the cause for him to end his life. While this seems extreme, remember that Tyler literally travelled to a private island with the knowledge that he wouldn't leave alive.

Plus, it's obvious that he was obsessed with Slowik, and upon realising his idol despised him it was hard for him to take. While we'll never know exactly what he said to Tyler, the indistinct words definitely leave room for individual interpretation...
