Netflix continues its global domination of the entertainment industry by making inroads into original animation, one of which will be a series based on the blockbuster film Pacific Rim.

The franchise was created by Academy Award winning director Guillermo del Toro. Following the concept of a battle between otherworldly beasts and man-made robots, the films starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, John Boyega and Scott Eastwood.

The films were blockbuster hits, making $701.5 million (£534.9m) worldwide, but dividedcritics. The Telegraph's Robbie Collins gave the first film a five star review but gave the second film two stars.

Netflix's Pacific Rim anime will further expand the franchise and return to the epic battle between the monstrous Kaiju and robotic Jaegers.

It will follow the journey of two siblings, an idealistic teenage boy and his naïve younger sister, who are forced to pilot an abandoned Jaeger across a hostile landscape in a desperate attempt to find their missing parents.

The series was revealed as part of Netflix’s first content showcase in Asia, and was one of a collection of new original series and films, including an Altered Carbon anime feature, from Japan, Taiwan, Thailand and South Korea.
