Noises Off at Lyric Hammersmith: First look at pictures of Meera Syal in classic comedy
The first production pictures have been released of Meera Syal in classic play Noises Off.
Michael Frayn’s comedy returns to the Lyric Hammersmith tomorrow, nearly 40 years after it premiered at the theatre in 1982.
Syal stars alongside ITV drama Cleaning Up’s Lloyd Dallas and Daniel Rigby, who won a Bafta for his role in the BBC’s Eric and Ernie.
Noises Off is what Frayn calls a “farce from behind”, taking place backstage with a theatre company performing a play called Nothing On. It follows an actress called Dotty Otley (Syal), her co-star and younger lover Garry Lejeune (Rigby) and the play’s director Lloyd Dallas (Owen).
Jeremy Herrin directs the production, with design by Max Jones, lighting by Amy Mae Smith and sound by Lorna Munden. The cast is completed by Lois Chimimba, Jonathan Cullen, Debra Gillett, Amy Morgan, Enyi Okoronkwo and Simon Rouse.
Syal told the Standard that the play is “a love letter to the theatre. You can really see the messy lives and the emotional upheaval that they go through and yet they have to put the mask on to go on stage.”
The play has been produced regularly since it premiered in 1982, and had runs on the West End and Broadway. Michael Caine, Carol Burnett and Christopher Reeve starred in a film version in 1992.
Noises Off runs at the Lyric Hammersmith from July 2-July 27.
