Ozark fans have been left with many questions around the season 4, part 2 finale. Mainly: WHY? Now, showrunner Chris Mundy has opened up about the way things ended, including an explanation of *that* main character's death.

*SPOILERS, obviously*

In the final moments of the final episode, Ruth Langmore was shot and killed by Camila Elizondro, the newly installed head of the Navarro cartel, after Camila discovered it was Ruth who killed her son Javi Elizonndro following Wyatt Langmore's death.

Unsurprisingly, fans weren't at all happy on how Ruth (played by Julia Garner) met her end, with many taking to social media to share their disappointment over why she had to die.

Now, Ozark's showrunner has spoken to Entertainment Weekly, explaining how the idea for the ending "developed over time."

He continued "It just became pretty clear... that this is what would happen to that character in that place in that situation, having done what she did in (season 4) episode 8, that that sort of authentic ending was that.

"So then it was just a matter of trying to figure that out, making peace with that or just saying, ‘Okay, that is what would happen, but we don’t want it to happen, so we’re going to do something else instead.'"

On what fans can take away from the ending, he added, "In a lot of ways, we both kind of hope — I certainly hope — that in some ways it makes her a more memorable character, just because she had this end, and hopefully at least her last moment was brave and on her own terms."

We're not sure we're going to get over it tbh, but maybe that does make sense.

Ozark season 4 part 2 is now available on Netflix.
