Prince Harry is understood to have asked permission to keep his beard for the royal wedding. The BBC reports that the newlywed would have been granted consent in order to keep his facial hair.

British military rules state that troops in uniform cannot have beards or moustaches and, as captain of the British Royal Army, Harry was expected to act accordingly. However, the newlywed bucked tradition and arrived with his ginger beard in tact. It is thought that he would have had to ask permission from the military or indeed his grandmother, the Queen, to do so.

His decision to keep his facial hair, rather than go clean-shaven, is just one of the traditions that the married couple decided to ignore. Far from the intricate Cinderella gowns expected from a royal wedding dress, Meghan Markle chose an understated dress by Givenchy couture.

The ceremony featured the non-traditional song of Ben E King's Stand By Me, sung by a black gospel choir, as well as a sermon by an American black preacher. The bride also decided to travel to the venue with mother Doria Ragland, rather than her father, and then walked half the aisle solo before being joined by her now father-in-law, Prince Charles.
