How Prince William and Kate Middleton "broke the big news" to Prince George that he'll be King
Any parent will tell you that they've got big dreams for their children's future – whether that's a successful career, ambitions to travel the world and so on. But for Prince William and Kate Middleton, the situation is quite different, given that the lives of their three kids have been mapped out since birth, particularly for their eldest son, Prince George, who will one day be King.
With such a mammoth future ahead of him, it's no wonder that William and Kate want to prepare their son as best they can, something which they've been focussing on more and more in recent years, according to royal biographer Robert Lacey.
On the topic, Lacey writes in his book – Battle of Brothers – that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wanted to tell Prince George of his destiny in a "controlled moment of their choice" so that he wouldn't find out by accident and become confused. In fact, the decision to break the news to George came after William's own "unhappiness at the haphazard fashion in which the whole business of his royal destiny had buzzed around his head from the start."
Lacey went on: "William has not revealed to the world how and when he broke the big news to his son. Maybe one day George will tell us the story himself. But sometime around the boy’s seventh birthday in the summer of 2020 it is thought that his parents went into more detail about what the little prince’s life of future royal 'service and duty' would particularly involve."
Despite being one of the most famous children in the world, Prince George has lived somewhat of a normal childhood up until now, thanks to the efforts of his parents who are slowly but surely introducing him to the role he'll soon play. "George is only just beginning to understand his destiny, but Kate has got the journey planned," royal expert Duncan Larcombe told OK!.
Pointing out just one of the ways his parents are preparing him, Larcombe added, "That really struck me after seeing George in his first grown-up suit with his parents at the Euros final in July."
He went on: "People were asking why they hadn’t let him wear an England shirt 'like a normal eight-year-old'. William was apparently keen on the idea, but it was Kate, the former commoner, who said no. She was showing George that being 'on duty' requires a different approach… he has to learn to don the royal armour."
