Julie Andrews says she probably won't be in new Princess Diaries movie

When we say The Princess Diaries 1 & 2 were *the* films of our childhood, we are not exaggerating. The 2001 and 2004 adaptations of Meg Cabot's novel series, starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews achieved icon status years ago, and they're the ultimate nostalgic pick-me-ups for every millennial. And while for years there was talk of a sequel, it never came to fruition - much to our dismay. However, it looks as though the wait is finally over, as it's been reported that a third movie is in the very early stages of development at Disney. (Someone pinch us!)

For some context, The Princess Diaries follows the story of the shy American teenager, Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway), who learns that she's heir to the throne of a small European country. Under the guidance and supervision of her estranged grandmother (Julie Andrews), and Genovia's queen, Mia must decide whether she wants to claim the princess title she inherited, or reject it completely.

Here's everything we know so far about The Princess Diaries 3, including when we can expect it to hit our screens...

Who is working on the The Princess Diaries 3?

While we know that Disney is working on the new film, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Aadrita Mukerji, whose credits include Supergirl and Quantum Leap is writing the script. They also added that Debra Martin Chase, who was a producer for the last two instalments is set to return for the third time.

Who will star in The Princess Diaries 3?

Due to the film still being in the early development stages, unfortunately, the cast has not yet been announced. This means we still don't know whether the original characters will make an appearance. One person we know who probably won't be making a comeback though, is Julie Andrews, who confirmed she most likely wouldn't reprise her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter to mark her AFI Life Achievement Award, she said: "I think it would be too late to do it now. Especially me, it’s too far down the line now to go back to it. It’s a lovely thought, but I don’t think it would probably be possible."

More recently this December, Julie Andrews gave another update saying she thinks it's unlikely she'll appear in the new film.

Speaking to Access Hollywood Julie said: "I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible.

"I am that much older, and Annie [Hathaway], the princess, or queen, is so much older. And I am not sure where it would float or run. In terms of us doing it, I doubt that now."

However, Anne Hathway has been vocal about wanting to return to the franchise in the past and told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live back in 2019 that there was even a script for the third movie. Most recently though, she told Entertainment Tonight that she was "pulling for it", and that she "would more than entertain it."

"If there's any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen," she added.

Mandy Moore, who played school bully Lana Thomas also said that she "would be game" to return when she appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show back in August.

What is The Princess Diaries 3's expected release date?

The news of the third film is still pretty fresh, which means we don't have a definitive date of when we can expect to catch it. All we can say for now is that we're just unbelievably excited that it's happening, so we guess we'll just have to wait *impatiently* for more updates!
