Reese Witherspoon has shared the single best piece of life advice she ever received.

The actress and producer has a tendency to be wildly successful at whatever she puts her mind to, from winning an Oscar for her role as June Carter Cash in 2006 Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line, to the steady stream of hits produced by her media company, Hello Sunshine.

So it follows that the maxims she lives her life by are worth knowing. Last week, the 46-year-old was kind enough to reveal this tip with her 27 million Instagram followers.

"Somebody just asked me the best piece of advice for young people, for anybody really," the Wild star shared. "It's so crazy easy. I say this to a lot of people but it's really surprising how hard it is.

"But the sooner you figure out that other's people's opinions of you are none of your business, and it literally don't matter what they think of you, you become free. Totally free."

The actress previously spoke to Women's Health about the importance of nourishing your mind and broadening your horizons, and how that can help you become the best version of yourself.

"Beauty isn’t just about what’s on the outside, it’s about how you feel, and I think there are so many things that go into how you find the best version of yourself," she said. "And that’s not only what you’re putting on your skin and how you’re taking care of yourself, it’s about what you’re reading."

She went on to explain that it’s the messages you choose to consume that make you who you are. "Who are the people you surround yourself with? What images are you putting in front of yourself? There are so many things you can do to elevate yourself," she told us.

"One simple thing someone said the other day is, ‘Does your Instagram make you feel good about yourself? Is it representative of all your ideas and also is it making you curious about the world?’ We get to programme what we see every day. And I think it’s good to be conscious of those things."
