Sarah Ferguson has hinted that she still speaks to the Queen regularly as she said the death of Prince Philip left a "huge void" in the Royal Family.

Author Ferguson also admitted that the royal house she lives in with her ex-husband Prince Andrew isn't her home, despite it being where she has lived throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and before.

Ferguson was speaking as she releases her first adult novel, Her Heart for a Compass, which is based on one of her ancestors.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Ferguson talked about her daily routine, which starts with eggs for breakfast and exercise, before working on her books or with her charities.

Of Philip's death in April, she said: "The Duke of Edinburgh’s loss has left a huge void in the life of the family. I have known him all my life: he played polo with my father.

"When it comes to the Queen I’ve always made it a rule not to talk about private conversations."

Of her life in the UK she said: "When I’m in the UK I’m lucky enough to stay at Royal Lodge [Prince Andrew’s official residence]. I wouldn’t call it my home as that would be presumptuous."

Ferguson married Prince Andrew in 1986 but they were divorced in 1996, having been separated for four years.

However they remain close, with Andrew's main home being the Royal Lodge, and Ferguson said they are good "co-parents".

Although divorced for 25 years, Ferguson still says her wedding day was the "happiest day of [her] life" and that she is "definitely not dating" these days.

She has dedicated her new book, published by Mills and Boon, to her daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

She told Hello!: "We are a tripod, and I'm so proud that we talk to each other about taking altitude and the higher ground. I say to them: 'Choose the hill that you're going to have a battle on,' and if you think it's worth it, then full steam ahead. If you don't, then work out the ramifications. I say to my girls: 'Learn from your mother's mistakes.'"

Her Heart for a Compass is released on 3 August, and is available to buy on Amazon, WHSmith and Waterstones.
