The Oscars is the grand finale of awards season; a celebration of the last year in film, the pinnacle of an actor's career and the acknowledgement of directorial excellence - all accompanied by a spectacular visual feast of old-Hollywood glamour on the red carpet. From the custom-made couture gowns to the most glittering of diamonds, the celebrities and their stylists pull out all the stops for this prestigious ceremony. But what actually goes into dressing a client for an event as important as the Oscars?

We spoke to six celebrity stylists - Petra Flannery, Miranda Almond, Aimee Croysdill, Georgia Medley, Zadrian Smith and Sarah Edmiston - who shared their all-time favourite Oscars red carpet looks and talked us through the magic behind dressing the A-list for the annual Academy Awards.

"I feel like my job, fundamentally, is to make [my clients] feel comfortable, to feel empowered, to feel good, to feel sexy - to feel whatever they need to feel in order to do the best job that they can do walking down that red carpet," says Miranda Almond, who is the personal stylist of Olivia Colman and Kristin Scott Thomas.

Petra Flannery, who styles Hollywood names including Emma Stone, Zoe Saldana and Renee Zellweger, adds that she wants her clients to feel individualistic. "I love when somebody puts something on and they go, 'That's it. That's what I want to wear.' And they exude that on the red carpet," she tells us.

Styling duo Zadrian Smith and Sarah Edmiston say that if a client starts dancing when they put on a particular look, they know they've got a winner. Smith explained: "I always end every fitting by saying, are you comfortable, confident and happy? And if one of those is a 'no', then you don't have the look. If everything is a 'yes', then you've nailed it. Our priority, and the most important thing for us, is our client's comfort, above everything. As long as they're comfortable, confident and happy then you've done your job."
