Netflix has released the first look images of their anticipated Jane Austen adaptation Persuasion, starring Dakota Johnson and Richard E. Grant.

Hollywood star Dakota takes the lead as nonconformist heroine Anne Elliot, a modern and progressive young woman who lives with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy.

When Frederick Wentworth -the dashing one she let get away - crashes back into her life, Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances.

Netflix says their reimagining of the author's final completed novel will take a "modern, witty approach".

In one of the new images, Dakota's Anne can be seen dressed in black as she peers expectantly out of the window, and in the other, Cosmo Jarvis's Frederick Wentworth and Henry Golding's William Elliot look to be having some form of confrontation.

Here's everything else we know so far of the period drama...

Persuasion is Jane Austen's final completed novel, which was published in 1817, six months after her death. The story follows a young woman named Anne Elliot who refuses to conform to the expectations of 19th century society, living with her snobbish family who are on the verge of bankruptcy.

When Anne's former fiance Navy Captain Frederick Wentworth reenters her life after no contact in more than seven years, it sets in motion many a humorous encounters as well as a second, well-considered chance at love and marriage for Anne in her second "bloom".

Persuasion launches on Netflix on July 15.
