Sheridan Smith says The Railway Children Return role was a "huge honour"
Sheridan Smith has discussed why her role in The Railway Children Return was such a "huge honour".
The sequel follows the lives of a new generation of railway children who are evacuated to Yorkshire during World War II, four decades after the events of the classic 1970 original film, which was an adaptation of the novel by E Nesbit.
Smith stars as Annie, the daughter of Jenny Agutter's character Bobbie Waterbury, a role that Agutter reprises in the sequel.
While speaking to Digital Spy, Smith shared that she had grown up watching the original film with her family, so being cast in the sequel was special for her.
"Oh, I absolutely had [seen the original]," Smith said. "I watched it with my family, my mum and dad, at Christmas one year. I really vividly remember it.
"We watched it a lot actually because it's so nostalgic, so beautiful, and then of course when I got the phone call about Railway Children Return and that I'd be playing Jenny Agutter's daughter, I was hysterical and very, very excited. And so was my family. So yeah, it's an honour."
The actress went on to say that it was "such a huge honour to be called Bobbie's daughter/Jenny's daughter", before giving further insight into Annie's role in the story.
"She's a great role, Annie. She's the headmistress of the school, so very strict and at times made me laugh because I'm so not like that with my son or any kids. But also she's full of heart and obviously she's Bobbie's daughter, so she's a great character to play."
Alongside Smith and Agutter, The Railway Children Return also stars Game of Thrones' John Bradley, Tom Courtenay and Jessica Baglow.
The Railway Children Return is released in UK cinemas on July 15.
