Sherlock boss shares condition to reprise Benedict Cumberbatch show
Sherlock creator Steven Moffatt has revealed the one condition he'd need fulfilled to revive the popular BBC One series... bring back the original stars!
Yep, Moffatt admitted he would only bring the show back to life if Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman both agreed to return to their roles. Doctor Strange's Cumberbatch, of course, played the titular role of Sherlock Holmes and Black Panther's Freeman was his partner in crime Dr John Watson.
It may have been five years since the duo's last case, but Moffatt told Deadline that he would "start writing" season five "tomorrow" if Cumberbatch and Freeman agreed to reprise their roles.
The former Doctor Who showrunner even gave a plea, asking: "They’re on to bigger and better things but, Martin and Benedict, please come back?"
Although Moffatt echoed these thoughts when he was asked about reviving the series — which aired for four seasons from 2010 until 2017 — last year, he did say that it might be "too sad" to return without Mrs Hudson actress Una Stubbs, who passed away at the age of 84 in 2021.
"Maybe if we reassembled that set and she didn't magically appear, we might all be too sad to make a show," he said while speaking to Radio Times.
Meanwhile, Cumberbatch weighed in on the possibility of a revival back in 2021, and while he wasn't opposed to the idea, he did admit that both his and Freeman's busy schedule's would likely make it difficult.
"I'm the worst person to ask on this because I never say never, obviously," he shared with Collider.
"But I don't know. And I'm the worst person to ask because my slate's pretty, pretty full at the moment, as is Martin's and all the other key players involved.
"So, who knows? Maybe one day, if the script's right. And I say 'the script,' maybe it could be a film rather than the series. Who knows? But anyway, not for now."
