Strictly Come Dancing's Gorka Márquez couldn't help but get teary eyed recently, when he recalled meeting his fiancée Gemma Atkinson on the show four years ago.

In 2017, the Spanish pro, who had joined the year before, was paired with The X Factor star Alexandra Burke. Behind the scenes though, he struck up a fast friendship with Hollyoaks' Gemma, who was competing with Aljaž Škorjanec – a friendship that ultimately blossomed into romance.

'We just became very good mates and I think that was the key, we were friends before everything happened... and now we have a beautiful daughter,' Márquez explained with a smile during a pre-recorded segment on last night's Strictly: It Takes Two (December 1).

'Without Strictly, I would never have met Gemma. She's the best person in the world. She inspires me every day, she makes me a better man, a better person, better everything, and I'm just grateful to have her and call her my fiancée,' he added, wiping away tears.

The 31-year-old's emotional tribute to his partner left viewers choked up, too, and many took to Twitter to share their reactions.

'Aww I just adore Gorka #ItTakesTwo,' one fan posted, while a second admitted: 'Currently crying with Gorka, wbu [what about you]? #ittakestwo.'

'Aww, Gorka talking about Gemma is just lovely,' another said.

Márquez and Atkinson, 37, welcomed baby Mia in July 2019, and announced their engagement in February of this year.

Strictly Come Dancing 2021 airs on Saturday nights on BBC One, with results shows every Sunday. Strictly: It Takes Two airs on weeknights at 6.30pm on BBC Two.
