Suranne Jones and Eve Best are joining forces for a new ITV drama.

The pair will lead Maryland, a three-parter being made for ITVX, the channel’s upcoming streaming platform. The series, which is being created by Jones and Anne-Marie O’Connor (Trollied), will air on ITV’s linear channel many months after its premiere on ITVX.

Maryland will see Jones and Best star as sisters, with the former playing a “down-to-earth mother-of-two”, while the latter will play a “disciplined high-flyer”.

Due to their contrasting personalities and lifestyles, the siblings have been driven apart by “complex family dynamics”, but they will soon be drawn back together following the discovery of a body on the Isle of Man.

After they travel to the island, they uncover shocking information about their mother, finding it “impossible to escape the ripple effect of her secrets and lies”.

Starring alongside Jones and Best are Stockard Channing (The Good Wife), George Costigan (Happy Valley) and Hugh Quarshie (Holby City). Sue Tully, known for her work on Line of Duty and Strike, will direct all episodes.

Monumental Television will produce the series in conjunction with ITV Studios, with the executive producer Alison Owen saying: “We feel privileged and are thrilled that Suranne has entrusted us with this, her original idea, from which Anne-Marie has crafted a wonderful drama.

“With these scripts and the support of ITV, we have attracted a dream cast and director, so we’re feeling very lucky at Monumental.”

ITV’s Head of Drama, Polly Hill, said of the announcement: “Maryland is a beautifully moving story of two sisters, and it’s hard to believe this is Anne-Marie’s first original drama commission.

“It has a wonderful cast lead by Suranne Jones and Eve Best and we are delighted that Sue Tully is directing. It promises to be a wonderful family drama for ITVX.”

Maryland will air on ITVX in 2023.
