The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe viewers aren't happy with this one detail in the ITV series
We've just had the first instalment of the latest true crime scammer-drama and obviously, we're all a bit obsessed. The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe, just aired its first episode over the weekend on ITV, and the four-part drama has already got fans totally gripped. However, there was one detail in the show that got a bit of backlash from viewers.
The series follows the bizarre and infamous story of John and Anne Darwin (Eddie Marsan and Monica Dolan), the Hartlepool couple who were convicted of fraud in 2008 after attempting to fake John's death to avoid bankruptcy and claim on their insurance to start a new life in Panama.
With mountains of debt and the threat of bailiffs, there’s only one sensible solution…

The new series, which began on Easter Sunday, will air on ITV throughout the week. And while plenty of fans took to Twitter following the first episode to discuss the strange case, some viewers weren't happy with the accuracy of the accents.
The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe. I remember this happening like it was yesterday, yet I don’t remember Hartlepool folk having Geordie accents 😂

In the new series The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe why are they speaking with Geordie accents? We are not Geordies in Hartlepool.

The Thief, His Wife, The Canoe and Eddie Marsan doing an accent straight out of Byker Grove, 40 miles north.

In fact, the response to the accents got to the stage that show writer, Chris Lang, eventually responded to the backlash on Twitter, clarifying exactly where the pair was from and saying he appreciated everyone's engagement with the show.
"It's lovely people are so passionate about their own accents! John & Anne of course weren't from Seaton Carew [Hartlepool], they only moved there in 2002," he wrote. "They were both born near Blackhall & over the next five decades lived and worked in (to name a few) Newcastle, Chester Le Street & Durham."

Either way, we truly can't get enough of this series and the general scammy-ness of TV right now.
