Two-time Oscar winner Olivia de Havilland has died at 104
Olivia de Havilland has died, the actress' publicist, Lisa Goldberg, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday. The Academy Award-winning actress passed away in her Paris home at the age of 104.
Born on 1 July 1916, de Havilland won Oscars for her roles in To Each His Own (1946) and The Heiress (1949). She was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her performance in Gone with the Wind, but ultimately lost out to fellow cast member Hattie McDaniel. She was also known for playing Maid Marian in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), opposite Errol Flynn.
The award-winner reportedly once said in an interview that "playing a good girl was difficult in the '30s, when the fad was to play bad girls". She continued: "Actually, I think playing bad girls is a bore. I have always had more luck with good girl roles because they require more from an actress."
A high-profile court case against Warner Bros in the 1940s resulted in The De Havilland Decision. The actress had brought legal action against the studio when they wouldn't release her from her seven-year contract, instead stipulating that a contract was suspended when a person wasn't working. Upon winning, it was ruled that the duration of a contract related to calendar years, and not actual days spent on the job.
