Vera season 10: Everything you need to know

Hold on to your bucket hats, because Vera is coming back very soon indeed.

The hit series, which follows DCI Vera Stanhope (played by the legendary Brenda Blethyn) and her knack for solving crimes, has finished filming its latest season in Northumberland and will be on our screens early next year.

Vera is the longest running British-made female lead detective series on ITV, and with the warmth and charm of Vera, her infamous hat and mac and her sidekick Detective Sergeant Aiden Healy (played by Kenny Doughty), it's easy to see why.

Since the last series ended, the accolades have been rolling in for the show. Back in February, Brenda, Kenny and the team were reunited for Vera's Royal Television Society North East win in February; the show received the 'Judges Award' for its outstanding contribution to the region.

Brenda loves playing Vera, so returning for a new series is always a treat. "Doing Vera is like coming back to an old friend," she says. "I love the character, I'm so blessed to have been given the part."

Vera season ten: When’s it on TV?

It was revealed back in February that Vera would be returning for a tenth series in 2020. It’s expected to air at the beginning of the year, and will play out as four self-contained feature length episodes, each one taking us back once again to the North East and to DCI Vera Stanhope and her team.

Vera season ten: What’s the latest news?

Vera recorded its biggest ever ratings in 2018 - with 8.4 million people watching the show. Season nine, which aired earlier this year, drew in 7.4 million viewers, making it one of the most watched shows in the UK in 2019.

Filming on season ten began in April, and finished at the end of the summer. Kenny Doughty shared behind the scenes snaps on Instagram.

Vera season ten: Who’s in it?

All the series nine favourites return, and ITV have released a new photo of the main cast taken on the set of series ten.

As well as Vera herself (Brenda Blethyn), the series ten cast includes: Kenny Doughty (Detective Sergeant Aiden Healy), Jon Morrison (DC Kenny Lockhart), Riley Jones (DC Mark Edwards), Ibinabo Jack (DC Jacqueline Williams), Paul Kaye (Dr Malcolm Donahue).

Vera season ten: What will it be about?

There will be four feature length episodes making up the latest series, with each story focusing on a different crime investigation. Each episode of Vera is inspired by the best-selling novels and characters created by acclaimed crime writer Ann Cleeves.

In the new series, Vera and her team will investigate four intricate and compelling murder cases in beautiful Northumberland. The cases will take the team around the county to a salmon farm, a greyhound stadium, and a tight-knit village, where Vera will be getting to the bottom of some perplexing murders that aren't all that they seem.

The first episode tells the tale of the death of a troubled entrepreneur, whose body is found when bailiffs attempt to repossess his house - and Vera uncovers family secrets that have been hidden until now.

Vera finds herself trying to solve various taxing cases in season ten: the mystery of a man haunted by a DNA test result, one troubled by a family estrangement and workplace harassment, and another killed in cold blood during a burglary.

They're all gripping tales, so we can't wait for Vera's return.
