Handel's oratorio, based on the First Book of Samuel, deals with the uneasy relationship between the King of Israel and his young successor, David.

Maverick director Barrie Kosky's 2015 production ripped up the rule book to dazzling effect, with the Telegraph's opera critic Rupert Christiansen saying: "There is nothing safe about this show. It's a knockout that brings the work blazingly alive and transforms bewigged pieties into high human drama. To hell with sacred solemnity."

The production stars Christopher Purves as the volatile, Lear-like title character, with acclaimed counter-tenor Iestyn Davies as David and Lucy Crowe as Saul's venomous daughter Merab.
