While TikTok is generally associated with making people go viral, the social media site has managed to make a hit out of book first published almost 20 years ago.

Why Men Love Bitches, by Sherry Argov, has reentered The Sunday Times bestseller list for the first time since it was released on paperback in 2003.

The self-help relationship guide – which is available for £9.16 on Amazon and promises to help women go “from doormat to dream girl” – charted in ninth place this week.

In the book, readers are urged to never fake an orgasm, and it features snippets of advice such as “the more independent you are of him, the more interested he will be” and “when you nag, you become the problem. When you don’t nag, he deals with the problem.”

Nielsen, who compile data for the book publishing industry, said that its recent popularity was in part due to young women and teenagers praising its empowering no-nonsense tips on the app.

Indeed, the hashtag #whymenlovebitches has been used more than 9.2 million times so far.

These include the actress and personal trainer from Liverpool, who runs the account @sarahelizabeth2020, who has received tens of thousands of views for her videos on the book’s pearls of wisdom.

Speaking to the camera in one clip, she said: “I get little chills reading this - it just makes so much sense.”

Another user, Swedish content creator @sarajhazbhay who lives in South Africa, has also shared several popular videos about the book.

In one, she said: “You might not agree with everything in this book, but it’s just really interesting to learn how men think and women think.”

The book has also received attention on Instagram, where the hashtag #whymenlovebitches has been used more than 6,000 times.

In a recent post, user @emilialosuna shared: “This is one of the most helpful books I’ve ever read.”

Speaking to The Sunday Times, Philip Stone, a Nielsen analyst, said that he was “sure publishers will take note” of how the book – first published in 2002 – had been given a “substantial drive” through TikTok, the first time he had ever seen it happen.

The book’s French-born author, who is 43 and now lives in Los Angeles, also penned Why Men Marry Bitches.

When both books were first published they were New York Times bestsellers.

Argov said she had decided to write a book unlike the “relationship books I read when I had my heart broken in my twenties, which were very serious”.
