Did you know that two-thirds of LGBTQ+ people (64%) have suffered abuse or violence, based on their sexual orientation? Or that 70 countries worldwide criminalise same sex relationships? It’s figures like these that make the message hit home: there’s still major work to be done to address prejudice both in the UK and around the world.

To celebrate the UK’s LGBTQ+ community and also tackle the remaining stigma, Yahoo has proudly chosen to be the official headline partner for the Brighton & Hove Pride 30th Anniversary festival this year named ‘We Are Fabuloso’.

Watch: What Brighton & Hove Pride means to me

The event, supported by Yahoo, takes place on Saturday 6 August (12pm-10.30pm) and Sunday 7 August 2022 (1pm-9.30pm) and promises to be the biggest yet.

Christina Aguilera will be headlining on the main stage on Saturday in Preston Park and Paloma Faith on Sunday, as well as over 100 LGBTQ+ artists across eight other stages. With other notable acts such as Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Ella Henderson and Bjorn Again, it promises to be an unforgettable party and celebration of diversity and love, in all its forms.

How Brighton Pride began

Brighton held its first Gay Pride march back in 1973, a small affair, without the famous parade, carnival floats and huge crowds that the event attracts today. The first full Pride festival took place in 1991, a direct reaction to the government passing laws to ban the so-called ‘promotion’ of homosexuality. What better way to put two fingers up to that than with one MASSIVE party across the town and show that being LGBTQ+ is something to be proud of?

Party with a purpose

Still today, 30 years later, the event continues to signify ‘Pride with Purpose’. Ticket sales and sponsorship will help to raise money for The Brighton Rainbow Fund. This central hub distributes grants to local LGBTQ+ projects, all with a common aim to make a tangible difference to the lives of hundreds of people within the LGBTQ+ community, including a special focus on those living with HIV. “We’re delighted that Yahoo have come on board as headline partners for We Are Fabuloso this year,” says Paul Kemp, Managing Director, Brighton Pride Community Interest Company. “With the return of the in-person live event in Preston Park, we’re looking forward to celebrating with them in style and fundraising for The Brighton Rainbow Fund.”
