Audra McDonald makes Broadway history

Broadway history was made at the 68th annual Tony Awards in New York. Actress Audra McDonald won her sixth award and became the only woman to win a Tony in all four acting categories. Hosting the ceremony was award-winning actor Hugh Jackman, who presented McDonald with the award for best actress. Acclaimed for her role as Billie Holiday in ‘Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar’, she is now tied with the late Julie Harris, who also had six wins. Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston took the Tony for best actor for his portrayal of Lyndon B Johnson in Robert Schenkkan’s ‘All The Way’, which also won best play. Meanwhile, comedy ‘A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder’ and 90s musical ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’ tied for the most Tonys, with four awards each. Sitcom star Neil Patrick took the title of Best Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of a transgender rocker who had been mutilated in a sex change gone wrong, in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch’.
