Backstage with... the stars of The Spanish Princess
- It makes a refreshing change, and for the female stars of the show, they hope it's a sign of a brighter future. "I've felt since coming out of drama school there have been really exciting opportunities, but it's also funny how they're kind of circled as, 'this is a show about women'," says Downton Abbey star Laura Carmichael, who plays Maggie Pole (or Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury, to give her her full title). Carmichael's co-star Georgie Henley, who plays Princess Meg Tudor, Queen of Scots, tells Backstage that a lack of diversity in female roles is a very recent memory for her.

Carmichael, 32, plays Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury, which follows the life of Catherine of Aragon (Charlotte Hope) from the women who surrounded her.

An incredible £68,390 has been raised to help hungry children across the capital after calls flooded in for our 12-hour telethon. Readers who donated spoke to the likes of Sir Ian McKellen, Frank Lampard and Daisy Lowe as the stars manned the phoned for this year’s Christmas appeal. Since 8am this morning they joined staff from the Evening Standard, Independent and London Live in support of the Help A Hungry Child Christmas Appeal, which is raising money for The Felix Project.
