The co-writer of the musical version of the hit BBC sitcom has revealed how the chance discovery of a forgotten song on a cassette in a garage helped to inspire the West End show. Serendipity played a conspicuous part in the musical life of Chas Hodges, one half of the hugely successful and durable north London duo Chas & Dave, never more so than in the early 1960s when he stuck out his thumb in the hope of hitching a lift after walking his girlfriend home. The car that stopped to pick him up was driven by Dave Peacock. Talk turned to music, Hodges explaining that he was playing bass guitar in the backing band for American rock’n’roller Jerry Lee Lewis.

Forget millionaires — this time next year they’ll be West End stars. Paul Whitehouse, of The Fast Show, and Jim Sullivan, son of the BBC sitcom’s creator John Sullivan, are behind the show. Comedian Whitehouse, who plays Grandad, also enlisted Chas Hodges, one half of Chas & Dave, to write some of more than 20 new songs that will feature.

Tottenham will pay tribute to Chas Hodges - on half of Chas and Dave - on Wednesday evening after the lifelong fan passed away at the weekend. The musical duo enjoyed a career association with Spurs and performed four FA Cup final songs with the club, in 1981, 1982, 1987 and 1991. The first was a double-sided single 'Ossie's Dream' and 'Glory Glory Tottenham Hotspur' which reached number five in the charts 37 years ago following Spurs cup final win over Manchester City at the Wembley replay.

Chas Hodges: Family reveal Chas and Dave musician's cause of death
The family of Chas Hodges have revealed his cause of death, following reports the late musician died of cancer. Hodges' relatives and musical partner Dave Peacock said on Tuesday that doctors ruled the 74-year-old died from pneumonia. A statement issued on Saturday morning announcing Hodges' death previously confirmed he had recently received successful treatment for oesophageal cancer.
