Climate change: Global warming 'could reach 4C by end of this century' after COP26 fell short of its aims, say experts
- There could be global warming of 4C by the end of this century despite pledges made at the COP26 climate summit, according to a new report. Researchers from the University of Exeter and the Met Office analysed worldwide policies and found that on the "current trajectory" the Paris Agreement's aim of limiting warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels is slipping out of reach. Professor Richard Betts, who led the research, said the agreements made at COP26 in Glasgow "have reduced the likelihood" of warming reaching 4C "but it remains possible".

Australia wildfires will be ‘normal’ if world warms 3C, warns Met Office
Scientists have warned the bushfires razing large swathes of Australia could become “normal” around the world as global temperatures are projected to increase by 3-5C this century.A review of 57 scientific papers published since 2013 suggested clear links between climate change and an increase in the frequency and severity of “fire weather”.

World's oceans warmer in 2019 than at any point in human history, study finds
The world's oceans have become warmer than at any point in recorded human history, a study has found. Last year's ocean temperature was around 0.075C above the 1981-2010 average. Lead author of the study, Lijing Cheng, said the ocean would have taken in 228 sextillion Joules of heat, or 228 followed by 21 zeroes, to reach 2019's temperature.

Australia's massive fires could become routine, climate scientists warn
Bushfires ravaging Australia have provided a foretaste of the kinds of conditions that could become normal unless the world moves rapidly to curb emissions of the greenhouse gases driving global warming, scientists have warned. Although Australia's government and parts of its media have attempted to downplay the role of man-made climate change in making the country more vulnerable to wildfires, a review of 57 scientific papers published since 2013 suggested clear links. The review found that c

Carbon dioxide levels to rise by near-record amount in 2019, Met Office warns
Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is predicted to rise by a near-record amount in 2019, the Met Office has warned. This combined with rising emissions from human activity, including burning fossil fuels, has meant scientists expect to record one of the largest-ever increases in CO2 levels in 62 years of measurements. Professor Richard Betts, from the Met Office Hadley Centre, said: "Since 1958, monitoring at the Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii has registered around a 30% increase in the concent
