Love Letters at Theatre Royal Haymarket review: trite, self-satisfied, but it works

Love Letters review, Theatre Royal, Windsor: Jenny Seagrove and Martin Shaw impress in a tale of almost-requited love
It’s remarkable how turret-touchingly close planes come to Windsor Castle on their groaning descent to nearby Heathrow. But perhaps the resulting noise blight is oddly reassuring at the moment for Her Majesty and family – a sign that life is returning to normal. And the same, I think, applies to Love Letters, the reopening flourish for the (very nearby) Theatre Royal, Windsor, which is among the first regional venues to get actors trundling back across the boards again (with socially distanced b

Another Mother's Son review: Jenny Seagrove's pluck isn't enough to win this war
Another Mother’s Son shows chipper favouritism towards its leading lady, with all her Greer-Garson-in-Mrs-Miniver practicality and pluck, as befits a home-front WWII drama produced by her husband, Bill Kenwright. The setting is Nazi-occupied Jersey in 1942-3, and here’s Seagrove as Louisa Gould, a real-life war widow harbouring an escaped Russian PoW named Feodor (though she calls him Bill) in her modest cottage.

Film reviews round-up: The Age of Shadows, Another Mother's Son
The Age Of Shadows is a tremendous thriller, combining Hitchcockian elements with action set-pieces and a slippery plot line as full of twists and betrayals as one of John Le Carre's Cold War thrillers. The pivotal character is a rugged Korean police captain Lee Jung-chool (played by the charismatic Song Kang-ho). The resistance, though, hopes he can be turned one last time.

Mourning her own son, the mother who hid a Russian PoW from Nazi occupiers, and made the ultimate sacrifice
The plane’s only survivor, he was promptly taken prisoner and transported to Jersey – the Channel Islands being the only part of the Britain Isles to have been occupied by the Nazis during the Second World War – and detained at Immelman, the island’s prison camp. Brought to her front door by a neighbour who hoped she would be sympathetic, Gould took pity on the boy.

Jenny Seagrove harbours a Russian POW in first trailer for Another Mother's Son
The period drama Another Mother's Son finds Jenny Seagrove playing a simple Channel Islands shop keeper facing the wrath of World War Two invasion, Jersey being the only British territory to fall under Nazi rule. In the first trailer for the upcoming film, Seagrove stumbles upon an injured Russian POW (played by newcomer Julian Kostov) shortly after news reaches shore that one of her sons has been killed in conflict overseas. Taking in the young POW, who she names 'Bill', she pledges to keep h

'Endeavour Episode 3 Rocket' TV Review - Shaun Evans Like 'The Hour's Hero, But With Crime And Fewer Cigarettes
The occasion, Princess Margaret's visit to a defence factory, in the midst of pressure to secure a contract from the Arabs, and a hefty load of banner-bearing union members. Come to think of it, with all that diction spoken in clipped RP tones, everyone dressed in beautiful coats while they battle over the crusade du jour, 'Endeavour' - set a decade later - is probably the best telly comfort yet for those of us still smarting from the abrupt departure of 'The Hour'.
