Our cottage is buried in the Cotswolds countryside, not far from Chipping Campden, in Gloucestershire. It dates back to the 18th century, is built of local stone and is at the end of a no-through road. One of the main criteria when I bought it, back in 1989, was that it had to feel like a refuge from the outside world, a place of peace and, crucially, a place I could practise the cello without being interrupted. I still have a rented flat in London, but this house has become the main home.
