Monkees star Mike Nesmith has died aged 78. Rolling Stone Magazine reported the musician had died at home in the United States. Along with vocalist Davy Jones, drummer Micky Dolenz and bassist Peter Tork, Nesmith recorded some of the decade’s most enduring songs, including I’m A Believer, Daydream Believer and Last Train To Clarksville.

Michael Nesmith, who was a singer and guitarist in 1960s pop group The Monkees, has died at the age of 78. Nesmith's manager Andrew Sandoval confirmed the news in a statement on Twitter. "We shared many travels and projects together over the course of 30 years, which culminated in a Monkees farewell tour that wrapped up only a few weeks ago."

The Monkees began life in 1966 as a pop group manufactured for American television and struggled for years to shake off the reputation of being unable to play their instruments. In the case of Peter Tork, who has died of cancer aged 77, this was a misconception of almost bizarre proportions. Tork was a multi-instrumentalist, de facto bass guitarist in a quartet comprising Michael Nesmith, who was also primarily a musician, and Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz, who were actors first and foremost.
