Noël Coward spent a good deal of time travelling by sea, often scribbling as he sailed. He wrote much of the operetta Bitter Sweet (1929) on ocean liners, and set his 1961 musical comedy – Sail Away – on one. Indeed, he first clapped smitten eyes on New York in 1921 after travelling on the beautiful Cunard liner, the Aquitania – which set sail from Southampton.

Charmian Abrahams: Crossroads actress dies after being hit by delivery van
An actress from the popular British soap Crossroads has died after being struck by a delivery van. Charmian Abrahams, who starred as Mavis Hooper in the long-running series during the early 1980s, died aged 96 following the collision in Harborne, near Birmingham, on Monday. On Friday, family members paid tribute to the actress, who also performed alongside theatrical greats including Sir Noel Coward, Albert Finney, and Sir Ian McKellen.
