Great Canal Journeys: how a bittersweet boating show captured viewers' hearts
One of the greatest love stories on TV seems to be over ... Tim and Pru in Great Canal Journeys. Photograph: Channel 4 Television‘My name’s Timothy West, and this is my wife, Prunella Scales.” Much of the tender magic of Great Canal Journeys is in that proud, robustly jolly, semi-formal introduction, habitually included in the narration as one venerated actor refers to his beloved other. Great Canal Journeys, episode 1 review: a lovely tranquil trip that was tinged with sadness
One of TV’s most charming series sailed back onto our screens last night, but it was bittersweet because this could well be the final voyage. Great Canal Journeys (Channel 4) saw actors Timothy West (skipper) and Prunella Scales (first mate-cum-cook) taking a tranquil trip down memory lane.

One track was a cruise not along a canal but up the Nile, in a grand flat-bottomed craft with 70ft sails called a dahabiyah (meaning “gold”, as in “The barge she sat in like a burnished throne…”). The other was the touching journey of Miss Scales (Lady West) into the unknown country of dementia.
