The London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) has drafted in a City heavyweight to conduct an independent probe of the boardroom crisis which triggered the ousting of its former chief executive. Sky News has learnt that Donald Brydon, the company's chairman, has written to its 20 largest shareholders to inform them of the review. It is being led by Simon Collins, the former UK chairman of KPMG - the "big four" audit firm.

KPMG pay plunges after firm suffers write-off costs
Partners at KPMG UK will see their average pay fall from £582,000 to £519,000 after the Big Four firm endured a host of write-offs on investments, largely in technology ventures. Although it saw UK billings rise 5%, after the one-off hits, pre-tax profits fell 19.5% to £301 million in the past year. New chairman Bill Michael replaced Simon Collins during the year and has quickly decided to stop a host of investments in largely tech-related ventures.

The UK boss of KPMG has lost out in his bid to become global chairman of the accountancy giant. Simon Collins, who threw his hat in the ring for the firm’s top job in December last year, has dropped out of the race in recent weeks, it is understood. A number of other senior KPMG figures were reported to be in the running, including chief executive of Germany Klaus Becker, and counterpart Elio Luongo, who holds the same role in Canada.
