Universal Music buys record labels ZTT and Stiff Records
Universal Music Group (UMG) has acquired two iconic record labels that were behind some of the biggest acts of the 1980s. The world’s largest music company has sealed a deal to buy ZTT and much of the catalogue owned by Stiff Records. The deal includes rights to artists including Frankie Goes To Hollywood, The Pogues, Madness, Grace Jones and Seal.

Under its new ownership, music industry titan Universal Music, uttering those four letters will probably get you a trip to HR rather than a laugh. Universal has bought a slice of rock’n’roll history as the music giant made a trio of acquisitions, including the label behind Elvis Costello’s early hits. The US group delved into hits of the Seventies and Eighties to buy British label ZTT’s entire catalogue, parts of Stiff Records and music publisher Perfect Songs from SPZ Songs for an undisclosed sum. Stiff Records, which emerged from London’s Seventies pub rock scene, spawned Dury, Elvis Costello and Madness.
