Ant-Man: The Wasp Confirmed To Feature

Marvel’s Kevin Feige has confirmed what many fans have been pondering about the upcoming ‘Ant-Man:’ that Janet van Dyne, AKA The Wasp, will appear in the movie - in some capacity.

Feige spilled the beans to MTV in a set visit on the long in-development, but ultimately troubled production based around the long-standing though comparatively obscure Marvel character.

The Marvel president and producer tentatively revealed that The Wasp “factors in a number of spoiler-ish ways [in ‘Ant-Man’]… But we will see Janet van Dyne in action in this film, and sort of what happened to her.”

This is the first confirmation that Janet van Dyne - wife of Michael Douglas’s original Ant-Man Hank Pym, and mother of Evangeline Lilly’s Hope van Dyne - will appear in any capacity.

Notably Feige reveals nothing of casting, which might throw into question whether the character will ‘appear’ in the film as such. But then, given her suit utilises the same miniaturisation technology as Ant-Man’s, it seems entirely feasible we could see her ‘in action’ without necessarily getting too good a look at her.

While Ant-Man and The Wasp are not necessarily the best known Marvel characters nowadays, both were founding members in the original Avengers comics, as Feige makes a point of emphasising.

“[Ant-Man is] an Avenger. He and Wasp are on the cover of that first issue of ‘Avengers’ …in the offices at Disney, we have big blow-ups of ’Avengers’ #1, and I just love the fact that each of those characters are finally coming to life — and two more will be heading there in this movie.”

The other three original Avengers, then, were Iron Man, The Hulk and Thor. (That’s right - Captain America was not a founder member.) The Wasp was even intended to appear in ‘Avengers Assemble’ at one point, and has appeared in Marvel’s ‘Avengers’ TV cartoon series.

It also seems more than likely that The Wasp’s appearances will be in flashback scenes. There have already been reports of 1960s-set scenes, possibly with cameo appearances from Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter and Dominic Cooper’s Howard Stark, detailing the young Hank Pym’s early dealings with SHIELD.

Ant-Man and The Wasp were also the subject of one of Marvel’s most notorious storylines, with Janet van Dyne suffering physical abuse at the hands of her husband - though there remains no indication of whether this will come up in the movie.

That said, MTV’s report does suggest that “whatever happened [to Janet van Dyne] wasn’t very good, leading to Cold War era hero Hank Pym hanging up his Ant-Man suit once and for all, and leading to a rift between Hank and his daughter, Hope.”

However, this gap will be bridged in some respects as father and daughter unite against a common enemy in Corey Stoll’s Darren Cross, who is using Pym’s technology to dangerous ends - leading Pym to enlist the services of Paul Rudd’s ex-con Scott Lang, making him the new Ant-Man.
