Actress Ashley Judd has said that she plans to press charges over vile, threatening abuse she has received on Twitter.

The 46-year-old star of movies like ‘Kiss The Girls’ and recently ‘Divergent’ was attending the Southeastern Conference basketball championship game over the weekend when she became victim to trolls.

She tweeted that she thought that the Arkansas Razorbacks, who were playing Kentucky Wildcats, were ‘playing dirty’.

But in return for her opinion, she then received a barrage of abuse, some of it threatening sexual violence.

Speaking to MSNBC, she said of her own tweet: “If I were in a more calm state of mind, I might have phrased [it] differently.

“I might have said, ‘I feel really disappointed with what seems [like] ultra-aggressive play.’ Instead, what I wrote [was], ‘I think Arkansas is playing dirty.’”

“Everyone needs to take personal responsibility for what they write and not allowing this misinterpretation and shaming culture on social media to persist.

“And by the way, I’m pressing charges.”

In a later interview with NBC, she went on to say: “The amount of gender violence that I experienced is absolutely extraordinary.

“And a significant part of my day today will be spent filing police reports at home about gender violence that’s directed at me on social media.”

At the time, Judd retweeted a number of the threats, too explicit and offensive to be re-published.

Despite Judd’s experiences, Twitter claims that it is taking steps towards curbing online abuse.

“We now review five times as many user reports as we did previously and we have tripled the size of the support team focused on handling abuse reports,” said a spokesperson for the social network.
