Cabin Fever Remake Using The Same Script As The Original

A remake of Eli Roth’s 2002 horror movie ‘Cabin Fever’ has begun production - and is using the exact same script as the original film.

Production companies Armory Films, Cassian Elwes and Contend announced that director Travis Zariwny began shooting the film this week in Portland, Oregon. Apparently it was decided to use Roth’s existing screenplay to avoid “a long, delayed studio development process.”

Actors Gage Golightly, Dustin Ingram, Samuel Davis, Matthew Daddario and Nadine Crocker take over the roles of the five college kids who head out to a cabin in the woods, only to find themselves falling victim to a flesh-eating virus.

Roth is on board the film as executive producer, and expresses every confidence in his new director:

“Travis had an amazing vision for my original script, and as a scary movie fan I really wanted to see it.

"I almost see this like re-staging a play, and I’m excited to see what ideas Travis and the cast bring to it.They’re all fans of the original and want to make a film that’s a new classic and I believe they will,”

Thus far, the overall reaction from horror fandom seems to be sheer bewilderment. For the most virulently anti-remake fans (of which there are many), this seems like confirmation that Hollywood has run out of ideas - particularly as ‘Cabin Fever’ is barely twelve years old.

Having said that, remaking a film from literally the exact same script is, in itself, a very unusual idea. The only other notable instance of this occurring was Gus Van Sant’s remake of ‘Psycho,’ which also went so far as to recreate Hitchcock’s classic literally shot-for-shot.

However, the general opinion is that Van Sant’s ‘Psycho’ was a horrendous waste of time on every level. Will Travis Zariwny’s ‘Cabin Fever’ be better received…?

'Cabin Fever' spawned a sequel, Ti West's 'Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever' in 2009; and a prequel, 'Cabin Fever: Patient Zero,' was released earlier this year.
