Captain Marvel Hires Female Writers, Seeks Female Director

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had recently declared that the writers for ‘Captain Marvel’ would soon become common knowledge, and now that time has come.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ writer Nicole Perlman and ‘Inside Out’ writer Meg LeFauve are reportedly “nearing a deal” to script the first female-led superhero movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, due 2018.

Intriguingly, The Wrap also report that Marvel are after a female director for the film as well, and cite rumours that Michelle MacLaren - who, quite literally, only just left Warner Bros/DC’s ‘Wonder Woman’ - might be a contender for the job.

Marvel themselves have made no official statement on the matter, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, Feige was so impressed with Perlman and LeFauve’s separate treatments that it was decided to get them working as a team on the movie.

Neither writer has many credits to their name. Perlman wrote the first draft of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ which was later extensively rewritten by director James Gunn. She also did some uncredited work on the script for 2011′s ‘Thor,’ and has reportedly written a treatment for a proposed ‘Black Widow’ solo movie.

LeFauve, meanwhile, previously produced ‘The Baby Dance’ and ‘the Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys’ before writing the highly anticipated upcoming Disney Pixar production ‘Inside Out.’

As to whether there’s any truth to the suggestion that Michelle MacLaren might direct: we daresay that’s most likely overenthusiastic speculation taken a little overboard, particularly given how the announcement of MacLaren’s withdrawal from ‘Wonder Woman’ came almost concurrently with the news that Perlman and LeFauve will write ‘Captain Marvel.’

That said, there’s no reason to assume MacLaren might not be in with a shot - but that could conceivably take the old Marvel-vs-DC rivalry to a whole new level…

Still, as has been noted, Marvel don’t have the best track record with female directors themselves, the studio having parted ways with original ‘Thor: the Dark World’ director Patty Jenkins under ostensibly similar circumstances.

Naturally there’s also no indication as to whether the role of the cosmically-empowered Carol Danvers herself has been cast yet - and it might be a while before we know, as it has been confirmed that, contrary to early rumours, the character will not appear in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron.’

‘Captain Marvel’ is due in cinemas on 2 November 2018.
