Chris Evans Plays Down Captain America Retirement Rumours

Captain America actor Chris Evans has attempted to quell rumours that he is set to stand down from his iconic role in the near future.

Having portrayed Marvel’s red, white and blue super-soldier Steve Rogers three times to date (four if you count that sort-of cameo in ‘Thor: the Dark World’), Evans is set to reprise the role twice more in next summer’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ and 2016’s third ‘Captain America’ solo film.

There have long been murmurs that Evans plans to retire from the role - indeed, possibly retire from acting full stop - once his commitment to Marvel is fulfilled.Read More: Captain America 3 Could Be The ‘End’ Of The Character

However, speaking to MTV News. Evans insists reports of his imminent departure from Captain America are greatly exaggerated.

“Who’s handing off the shield? Don’t take my job from me prematurely dude,

“I’m sure it’ll happen at some point, all good things have to come to an end. But I’m really happy playing the character.”

The actor was also keen to emphasise his excitement about starting work on the as-yet untitled sequel to this year’s ‘Captain America: the Winter Soldier’ - for which he admits knowing the story.

“It’s this giant web of plot, where everything is connected to everything else…

"That’s the beautiful thing, and especially for the fanboys who understand these plotlines. With Cap 3, we’re going to continue this excitement.”

Unsurprisingly, Evans was reluctant to give away much more, simply saying, “Marvel doesn’t disappoint… Whatever you’re hoping for, you’re probably going to get.”

Evans was speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival, which is hosting the premiere of his directorial debut ‘Before We Go,’

His next appearance as Cap, ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ will hit UK cinemas on 24 April 2015.
