Could the finishing line finally be in sight for the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise?

Deadline reports that Universal is planning to send its beloved petrolhead series off to the scrap heap with ‘Fast and Furious 6’ director Justin Lin returning to shoot a finale that will span over a number of installments.

The report says, “Here’s what I hear: I expect Lin and Universal to begin talking again about him directing a multi-part production that will lead to multiple movies shot together and will wave the checkered flag on the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise.”

Lin has directed four of the franchise’s seven films to date, beginning with 2006’s ‘The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift’ and ending with ‘Fast & Furious 6’. Each of his films earned more at the box office than its previous installment, but he left the series to work on the next ‘Bourne’ spin-off featuring Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross.

However, with Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass returning to the spy series, Lin’s spin-off is now dead in the water opening up the door for him to return to the ‘Fast’ franchise.

Horror director James Wan was brought in to steer ‘Fast and Furious 7' into cinemas, but he looks set to be replaced after just one film if these rumours are correct.

A multiple-part finale, shot back to back, would be a fitting ending for the much-loved series which has defied odds to become one of Universal’s most successful properties ever.

Following the untimely death of Paul Walker, whose character will be given a send-off in ‘Fast and Furious 7’, it seems like a fine time to park this franchise in the garage.

We’re already looking forward to the inevitable reboot. Watch the latest trailer for ‘Fast and Furious 7’ below.
