How Much Of Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man Remains?

It’s no secret that Marvel’s ‘Ant-man’ is based on a script by Edgar Wright who has since left the movie behind. But how much of his original script remains? ‘Ant-man’ screenwriter Adam McKay tries to explain.

In an interview with Collider, the new ‘Ant-Man’ scriptwriter revealed that plenty of Edgar Wright’s original script remains even if he has added some new action sequences.

“I really thought we put some amazing stuff in there and built on an already strong script from Edgar Wright and sort of just enhanced some stuff,” he said.

“We added some new action beats. I grew up on Marvel Comics so the geek in me was in heaven that I got to add a giant action sequence to the movie; I was so excited. So we did, we added some cool new action.”

Of course, the 46-year-old filmmaker took over writing duties after the high profile of Edgar Wright, who had been working on ‘Ant-Man’ for almost a decade. But how much of his work remains?

“There’s a lot that’s already in there from what Edgar did,” he explained. “There’s a lot of dialogue and character still in there.”

“We just shaped the whole thing, we just tried to streamline it, make it cleaner, make it a little bigger, a little more aggressive, make it funnier in places – we just basically did a rewrite. Edgar had a really good script. But we just had a blast, and Rudd was just so much fun to write with. I walked away saying, ‘Hey, you and I gotta write a script together’.”

But has McKay’s rewrite really enhanced the original script?

I have to admit, I’m starting to feel a little more positive about ‘Ant-Man’. After Edgar Wright’s high-profile exit, I couldn’t help wondering what on earth Marvel were going to do. And while I still think that Edgar Wright is the best person to direct and Edgar Wright movie, it doesn’t sound quite as bad as I thought it might.

Of course, we won’t know for sure until the film heads to cinemas in 2015. But I get the feeling it might just surprise the critics.
